Premilinary Exercise Final Magazine

This is the final draft of the preliminary exercise, looking firstly at the way the design has turned out, I managed to change a few things as the way it first looked in the plan however the idea of having the main image in the middle is still there, and around it are the other images in faint fade. The titles that I have used are the same as the ones in the plan such as 6th formers or Teachers Lounge, the house style is red and sort of pink/white which is shown in both the cover and contents page.



Q Magazine Contents Page

In the above image conveys the contents page of the Q magazine. Firstly looking at the composition of it; the way that the page is laid out is through a double spread, and on the left hand side has a layout of images all around the sides, with little bits of information about it on the side with its page number. However on the right hands side, it is in columns of two on the left hand side with bits of information and page numbers in order and two big images on the right and bottom. The effect this has is the way the images being laid out as a sort of collage attracts the viewer on the story, to me its basically conveying that the bigger the picture the is, the more important it is and the reader should attend to it. 

With this magazine, I cant really say there is a main image because there are many that have been laid out with some being big in size but however I can clarify that one of the images has a relation another, one about Rihanna, which is displayed on the front and also on the contents page, so if there was a main image, I would certainly say that Rihanna's is. And the reason why it would be chosen would maybe be to attract the audience due to her popularity or of how big her news story was. The style of it is how each story must have an image which sells the story itself, and with this it has the contents page number and a little bit of information about it just to give the reader that idea of what they could be reading. 

As for its Graphics, it has a similar or more or less the same sort of it through to its content page. For example the icons and logos of the Q seen on the top left, and again on the next page, not necessary on its own but with something else but its displayed, the effect this has is implanting the memory into the readers of the magazine they are reading. The amount of images that are displayed play a big role on the illustration effect, as not only is it just an image but it helps in clarifying and explaining. 

There isn't a headline however on the left hand side of the double page spread there is circle bordered bit of text, and it being at the centre of the page with images around out sort of tells me the reader that what it is saying being "2013 Q magazine Long-range forecast  relates a lot with the rest of the stories or news found in the magazine, so in a way acting as a headline. The page is defined as a contents page with the way that its laid out in columns and also with the page numbers. The fonts that have been used look like Berlin Sans FB and Arial, both having the boldness and style. And there are two main styles which seem to be used on the contents page. How the vary is through the little bit of information being given out underneath or beside the images. 

The page is also in the same colour code as it was from the start, which was the red, black and grey which carries on through and that's the way that it creates the house style, by being carried on through. The way it relates to the front cover is through the colour and also the fonts, but also the images. And by images i mean that the colour code also relates to the images, so the images displayed or picked must have a sort of dark background which creates that blending with the colours used. 

Preliminary Exercise Draft Plan

This is my initial idea or draft plan of the school magazine which is the preliminary activity. I've tried to make it artistic as possible, but the idea is to have the medium shot character at the centre sort of holding the cross, and in the background, being such things as teachers lounge or sports section, maybe 6th former and so on.

So overall i am planning on having five images including he one in the centre. As seen in the image, the titles that i will have is Top students, Head's Message, 6'th Formers and Teachers Lounge. The idea is to make the individual in the centre look as if they are holding the the cross.

The house style that i will be using are red and white across the the front cover and contents page, i will be making sure that the balance is right.

Preliminary Exercise Pictures

My task is to create a school magazine and these images are the ones that are to be used in the designing of it.
 
 Looking at the image on he left is one of the library, it is a long shot and I took the shot due to the fact that it portrays where the students do some of their studies. On the right is the image of the school logo and I am hoping to use it on the magazine, i took other images of a cross which could work as an alternative if the above one didn't fit in well.  

               

 
The image above and on the left of the school children is taken from a high angle shot, so it shows the subject from above, camera is angled downwards. The one on the right is a two shot, showing two individuals, looking at the framing and proxemics, it shows that the individuals are close or know each other.








These images are medium shots taken from different positions as you can see in the background of one shows a school poster whilst the other of the school boy is against a wall.

This image is a sort of over the shoulder shot showing both individuals, the effects is seen as one being closer and one being further away 

TAPE Analysis

 

Q Magazine

On the 15th of January, we were handed a choice of magazines that were related to our task, being in a group of three, we choose on the Q magazine which we had to do a TAPE analysis. TAPE (Type, Audience, Purpose and Effectiveness). Type involving things such as is it a review or an advert, the sort of codes used such as the images and their written language. The audience involved such things as male or female, their age and so on. As for Purpose it was more of what the magazine was aiming on doing to the reader. Lastly is the Effectiveness which is stating whether it has given off the effect it was meant to such as has it attracted its viewers?.

Being the first time doing this i can say that there are a few things that i have learned or got out of it, for example on how identify the key things that the magazine uses to insure that it has the effect of it such as the codes, how magazines can achieve their aims by making the audience feel lets say amused if that is the effect it is aimaing at. There also was the colour coding which i found rather very important because it follows on through the rest of the magazine and in this case it was the red and black.

There are some ideas that has caught my eye whilst going through the above magazine, the first being its colour coding, even the images that were picked out, most of the had that dark background. Also the way that the images and texts have been set out, some overlapping, the texts varing in different sizes, conveying on what is important and the ones which are not, so the bigger ones are sort of telling the reader "i want you to see/read this one first".

So through the use of TAPE, alot can be dicovered about a magazine as seen in the above image that me and my group have done.  

It all Begins......

Being in an exam hall for two hours writing pages and pages of words, i could now say that the first 50% of my course was done (the exam). 

And now it was time for the coursework to start, it counts for the other 50% of AS marks. The brief is to produce the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine, some of the things that i have to consider are the process and outcome. 

But before this is the Preliminary exercise which is there to help me the student in getting the idea of what is to be done when the main task is began, so more or less getting a grasp of the program. With this particular exercise, i have to produce a front page of a new school/college magazine featuring a photograph of a student in medium, close up also including some appropriate laid out text with a mast head. 

One thing that i am worried about is how i am new to this so i have to adapt to these certain software's fast, this is the first ever blog i have ever written, not sure i even imagined i will be writing one at any point but the positive thing is how i will be learning on something new. I will be at 100% at the end of this piece of coursework towards my AS grade so to which i will be at a work rate of more than 100%.
